HarperCollins Announce a New Worldwide Publishing Deal With Raymond E. Feist

From HarperCollins Publishers 18 May 2007

HarperCollins are delighted to announce the acquisition of world rights in six new epic fantasy novels by international bestselling author Raymond E. Feist. Publishing Director Jane Johnson concluded the multi-million dollar deal with Abner Stein which will see HarperCollins publishing Feist globally throughout its sister companies and controlling his foreign language sales, which will be co-ordinated by Rights Director LucyVanderbilt working with Senior Rights Manager Airlie Lawson and Rights Executive Rachel Clements, as well as entering into the digital market with at least one exclusive project.

Johnson says, 'Raymond Feist is one of the true greats of modern fantasy. MAGICIAN was chosen by the public as part of the BBC TV The Big Read, and I am thrilled that Ray will be continuing his 22-year association with us, since we have published him from the very start of his career. This new deal represents a true partnership between author and publisher and we all expect great things from it. It's a very exciting move.'

Feist says, "I'm delighted to sign this new contract with HarperCollins. I have nothing but respect for the entire team and the continued support, belief, and enthusiasm they have collectively shown for my work. It is that belief and enthusiasm that made it vital for me to continue this relationship and endeavour to build on past success."

Clarification of Raymond E. Feists Official Website

Following a question on the Feistfans-L mailing list regarding the status of 'www.raymondfeistbooks.com'

Ray clarified:-

That's HC's "official author's site," and they have one for each of their top sellers.  In theory, each publisher could do thus. However, it's not MY official website.

Best, R.E.F.

Some News - Future Books

Raymond E. Feist posted the following announcement today to the Feistfans-l Mailing list

Just to let you know, this morning I agreed in principle to a new contract with HarperCollins (Harper/Voyager in the UK; Avon/Eos in  the US) for six more books, plus a special project to be discussed.

This will end the Riftwar Cycle.  Two books in the Demonwar Saga and three books in the Chaoswar Saga.  The sixth book will most likely be the first in a new series set in an entirely new environment.

The special project will in one fashion or another wrap up the Krondor series, but at this point exactly what will be done and how we're doing it hasn't been decided.

In any event, this means I'm going to be writing a little longer and you're going to have to put up with me for a few more years.

Best, R.E.F.

Marvel Comics announced that they will partner with Dabel Brothers Production

From Marvels website - http://www.marvel.com/news/comicstories.625

Baltimore Conference
Marvel made some blockbuster announcements at the Baltimore Retailer Summit, including the shocking news of Astonishing X-Men writer Joss Whedon taking over the writing chores of Runaways after Brian K. Vaughan finished his run with Michael Ryan becoming the new regular artist.
But Whedon taking over Runaways wasn't the only news as Marvel announced a partnership with the comic book studio Dabel Brothers Production with Marvel acting as the exclusive publisher for Dabel Brothers Production. ......

Marvel Comics announced that they will partner with Dabel Brothers Production

Popular indie fantasy publisher acquired by Marvel Comics
By Matt Powell
Posted September 11, 2006 8:33 PM

During today's Retailer Summit in Baltimore, MD, Marvel Comics announced that they will partner with Dabel Brothers Productions, an independent comic book publisher/production team most noted for adapting fantasy novels into comics written by a collection of best-selling authors"We chose to work with each other because we saw that we had mutually beneficial goals, and that we could both improve our businesses by working together," said Dan Buckley, Publisher of Marvel Comics.

David Gabriel, Vice President of Sales for Marvel Comics, explained the direction Marvel aims to go with Dabel Bros.
"We hope to bring new readers into stores by leveraging these best-selling authors, and reaching a wider-audience than we already are with Marvel's best-selling super-hero comic books," said Gabriel.

Les Dabel, one of the founders of Dabel Brothers Prod. Said the biggest benefit of working with Marvel will be "access to Marvel's artists and writers.'

Creatively, Dabel said Dabel Bros. Will retain its consistency.
"We plan to continue the same way have, only now with Marvel's editorial support," said Dabel.

Headlining first from Marvel and Dabel Bros. Is fan-favourite, Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter, written by Laurell K. Hamilton. As a way to cement the publishers' partnership, the comic will feature a cover by superstar artist Greg Horn.

The tale chronicles Blake's alternate-universe battle against vampires, zombies, and werewolves who have been declared "legal beings" by the U.S. government.

While Marvel confirms there are no immediate plans for crossovers between Marvel and Dabel Brothers' respective universes, Buckley leaves fans hopeful.

"We have no plans to do any crossovers at this time, but who knows, anything is possible," said Buckley.

Publications on the horizon from Marvel and Dabel Bros. Include Orson Scott Card's Red Prophet: Tales of Alvin Maker, Raymond Feist's The Magician: Apprentice, Ptolus: City by the Spire, and The Hedge Knight.

Future Writings

Ray posted to the Feistfans-L Mailing list the following in response to a question about future writings (Edited)

I have plans at this point to do one thing only, finish the entire Riftwar Cycle. If I don't screw up and come up with an idea that takes me off on some mad tangent, it'll go like this:
Riftwar (3 novels)
Krondor's Heirs (2 novels)
Empire (3 novels)
Serpentwar (4 novels)
Conclave (3 novels)
Darkwar (3 novels)
Unnamed 4th Riftwar novel (1 book)
Demonwar (3 novels)
That's 22 novels to make up the entire 5 Riftwars. The Legacy and Legends books are not, to my thinking, really a structural part of the cycle, but rather tangential story arcs. I might get to squeeze in the last Legacy story (if we ever get the issues with Sierra resolved), or not--hell, I've given away enough about Sidi/Varen in the last two books, it might even be kind of pointless to write The Dark Mage.
If you toss in the six Krondor and Legends books, that's 28 Midkemian novels in total over about 30 years.
I may take a break.
I may start up an entire new world.
I may go back and write Midkemian stories totally unrelated to the Riftwar, perhaps down in Kesh, or Novindus, or who knows where.
So, the answer to your question is I'll probably not do any prequels, but anything else is certainly possible.
Best, R.E.F.

Online Games

Ray posted to the Feistfans-l the following

It's two days early, but I might as well tell you know. The text game is going forward, but the graphic on-line project is now cancelled. Iron Realm had a great idea, but the economies of the market made it almost impossible for them to find the partner necessary to achieve that vision.
So, for the time being, the Massive Multi-Player, Online, Game is done.
