The Kingdom because of two reasons: 1) it was the most developed area of Midkemia in 1977, when I started writing the novel 2) it provided the most "familiar" elements I wanted for the 1st half of the novel, a Pseudo-medieval, Norther-Western European, semi-feudal, etc. so that when we joined Pug in Tsuranuanni, we get slapped in the face with culture clash. Ironically, the Japanese didn't buy the 2nd and 3rd Empire books because the setting wasn't "exotic enough."
