If you read Rage and Shards you'll see some info there that would have been part of sub-plots and story development in Return.
It's the story that introduced Miranda and Bobby, though Miranda would still have been a shadowy character that (at that time) Calis didn't trust.
The book is summed up a bit in Shadow of a Dark Queen when Bobby is telling Nakor what happened the last time he and Calis went down under with Nicholas.
