Feist is German in origin. It's pronounced "rhymes with Iced." It means "thick" and often is used with another world, such as Feistmantle, a ski jumper for the West German Olympic team years ago, which means "thick cloak." There seem to be two groups of Feists in the US, those who came from the Volga German population in Russia and those (my family) who came from Alsace-Lorraine (French since World War II--has changed hands many times over the centuries).
