A word of power is a very complex, powerful spell. A magician can take years building one. When the spell is done, it's triggered by a "magic word" usually a bunch of nonsense syllables that you wont' accidentally utter ('moakamusticka' would be a good choice; 'butter' wouldn't be). After you memorize the spell you just point at where you want it to go off and utter 'moakamustica!' and the thing goes off.
