Why was a Tsurani Great One on the ship that crashed on the beach and not using a transportation orb?

It's mentioned in passing, but he was there protecting some stuff important to the Warlord--I never went into detail beyond that.   Assume it was either very valuable or magical and this was one of the  Warlord's "pets" and the one thing he didn't anticipate was a storm  beyond his ability to deal with (I touch on weather magic in the new  series, slightly) and he fashioned a rift on the fly to no avail.
